Book Review: Steven Alten's Meg books

Thu May 5, 2005, 4:26 PM
For those of you who dont know, Carcharodon (or Carcharocles, if you beleive the propoganda that Meg's a cousin to great white and not an ancestor. LIES, I SAY!!) megalodon, who's name literally translates to "big tooth", is a shark that grew at least fifty feet. That assumption, I have heard, is based on the assumption that the biggest tooth found was the biggest one in the mouth of the biggest shark.

Meg is about an ex-Navy man, Jonas Taylor, who was forced to do three (or some such number) dives into the Mariana Trench in a week. He saw what looked like the insane grin of a giant shark comming from beneath him, panicked and sent his sumbersible rocketing toward the surface, killing the other two members of his crew.

Considered a laughing stock and chased out of the diving feild, he became a paleobiologist, studying the supposedly extinct megalodon and how it may have survived, seeking refuge in the warm, thermal layer in the Mariana Trench.

I won't spoil the details, but a pregnant meg female ends up eating her way through surface waters, leaving a path of destruction in her wake. Full of science and gore galore, a must for any shark fan and enough to keep you out of the ocean for awhile.

The three books so far are Meg, The Trench, and Meg: Primal Waters. If you go to [link], he's having a poll on which book he should right next. VOTE MEG4, I SAY!!

Then run out and by the trio and read.

Then go surfing!
